General Bertram Roth (? - 2125) is the secondary antagonist of Red Faction: Guerrilla and the leader of the Earth Defence Force deployment on Mars, operating from his headquarters at EDF Central Command in the sector of Eos during the Second Martian Uprising.

Background[]

The ringleader of the EDF’s bloody and brutal oppression of the Mars colonists, General Roth’s ruthlessness knows no bounds. He has consistently ordered the soldiers under his command to shatter the rebellion through any means necessary. After his assignment to Mars, Roth became convinced that his enemies within the Earth Defense Council – intent on destroying his career – were behind his transfer to the “dead-end, backwater planet.” This paranoia fuels his every action.[1]

Roth's inability to actually quell the insurgency, compounded by the steady loss of control over key resource sectors and withdrawing of EDF troops to Eos resulted in Admiral Kobel being dispatched with the EDS Hydra to Mars, in order to assume command and secure Mars for Earth. In a last ditch attempt to save his career and his governance, Roth launches the Raid on the Badlands Safehouse against the Red Faction enclave in the hills of the distant sector achieving a shocking blow against the insurgency which cripples and scatters them, killing their commander Hugo Davies and many other key members.

He claims total victory, but fails to account for Alec Mason and Samanya. The remnants of the Red Faction join forces with the Marauders, hatching a plan to destroy the EDF powerbase on Mars for good. Rallying scattered fighters using the Voice of Mars in a pirate broadcast, they launch a lightning strice on EDF Central Command and then attack Mount Vogel, to secure Capek's experimental rail accelerator.

Roth personally defends the summit, piloting a heavy tank. His efforts are ultimately futile, as he is killed by a combined attack by Mason and the Marauders. The EDS Hydra is destroyed shortly thereafter.
